Meditation and Gene Expression


A Powerful 2008 Harvard experiment has shown that meditation affects us at the genetic level and clarifies why it had such a profound impact on health. Twenty volunteers were trained in various relaxation response techniques for eight weeks. After only 8 weeks, genetic analysis of the volunteers blood found that 1,561 genes were expressed differently (switched on or off) after the training: specifically, 874 genes were upregulated ("dimmer switch" turned up) and 687 were downregulated (dimmer switch turned down). <ore experienced practitioners of the techniques were found to have 2,209 genes affected.
