I've posted many times on the benefits of meditation. But it is all easier said (or read) than done. after years of struggle and incremental progress I've had a major breakthrough. The key is a device called Resperate:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/RESPeRATE-Ultra-Lower-Blood-Pressure/dp/B0046YR9D2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1326899175&sr=8-1
This simple device allows you to measure your breaths per minute. It's primary use is to get the purchaser to slow down their breaths per minute in to a blood pressure lowering less than 10BMP. Less BPM more efficient heart and deeper breathing equals more oxygen - amazing benefits.
Deep oxygenated breath is also part of yoga. In this way yoga is a exercise meditation - one of it's many benefits. now with Resperate meditation is made easier because the device encourages you to not only slow and deepen your breath but to FOLLOW your breath as well. Awareness, following the breath, and bring your mind back to watching your breath from other "thoughts" are the tenants of most meditative practices.
Use the device with your eyes alternating between open and closed and see how your breath works. Time spent with the device will bring a breakthrough in awareness to your breath. That is the first giant step. I use it for 20 minutes in the morning and 20 minutes before bed. I have become so aware of my breath that i not watch my breath and nothing else distracting while i am walking. Walking mediation daily. All in all it adds up to over an hour a day of deep aware breathing and meditative practice. This from someone who struggled to do 5 minutes in the morning prior to Resperate.
